Dear friends.
I am starting new chapter in my life. Back to Ocean cruising in waters of beautiful British Columbia.
I have purchased an other sailboat after realizing, that we are getting no-where with insurance claims.
I have decided to spent money on an other sailboat, rather then pay for an attorneys.
They could not guarantee settlement.
Sailing and exploring is really big part of my life. I was quite lost without sailboat.
I have spent last 2 years modifying an other sailboat "Ocean Echo 1" to my standard. I wanted back, what I have lost.
It took 8-10 years to modify my last (lost) sailboat, while I was still working. I am retired now and have more time to do bigger projects.
British Columbia has very beautiful coast line with thousands of islands.
We have 2 different areas of traveling along the coast.
Inside Passage starts in Seattle - Washington, along British Columbia coast and up to Alaska.
These are sheltered waters, traveled mostly by commercial ships and cruise ships.
Summer time can be busy at Inside Passage with private vessels, cruise ships, etc..
West Coast of British Columbia (BC) is an open Pacific Ocean, which can be wild and rough any time of the year. Mostly in the fall and winter months.
This is the reason, why the West Coast of BC is very rugged and beautiful.
Offshore buoys record heights of the waves and wind velocity.
Highest recorded waves seem to be during November an December - over 100 meters (300 feet)!!!
I have had bad situation on West Coast many years ago. Dealing with 15 meters (45 feet) waves and 55 knots of wind, fighting for survival.
I had to hand steer my sailboat for 18 hours non-stop. Automatic (electronic) steering could not handle the size of the seas.
Southern part of BC has quite warmer and dryer climate then Northern part of BC.
I will be leaving at the end of May for a few weeks of cruising at Southern part of BC's West Coast.
Second half of the summer gets foggy on West Coast. That is the time to move back to inside waters.
I am attaching a few photos from last summer. These were taken in local waters near Vancouver.
I was still in boat modification mode. Longer trips were not possible yet.
Many areas of BC's coast are excellent destinations for sea kayaking.
Good and easy kayaking is inside the Strait of Georgia.
West coast of Vancouver Island is well known for Ocean kayaking - Broken Group islands in Barkley Sound.
Many kinds of whales are often visiting Barkley Sound.
Arbutus trees are a special treat along Southern Coast of BC. They grow only at Sea shores - not inland - they are very beautiful!
Color of an Ocean - Sea water is tied to water temperature.
Dark blue Ocean - Sea water is usually in warm waters near Equator.
Blue-Green colors are usually at 20-30 degrees North or South of Equator.
Green colors are usually above 30 degrees North or South of Equator.
British Columbia is at 49 degrees North of Equator with green Ocean - Sea water.
Vancouver has 3 ski areas above the city at North Shore Mountains (20-30 minutes drive from downtown).
Whistler Olympic ski resort is approximately 120 km from downtown Vancouver.
I hope, that you might enjoy photos from hidden parts of the World.
Kind regards. JJ (Jara) Holcman s/v Ocean Echo 1
