Dear friends.                                                                           14. November 2018

Clayoquot Sound was next destination to visit. Most of tours for Clayoquot Sound and Hot Springs Cove originate from town of Tofino.
Gray whales are quite common site at Clayoquot Sound and Hot Springs Cove coastline during the summer.
Most of coastline here is shallow, but inlets are deep.
Clayoquot Sound has a lot of fish/salmon farms. There are plenty of discussions about environment, Ocean's health & marine salmon farming.
Kayaking is also popular in Clayoquot Sound, which is not as windy and rugged as Broken Group.
Pacific Porpoises (similar to Dolphin) feed in quiet waters of Clayoquot Sound. It is nice to watch them feeding around the anchorage.
Hot Springs at Maquinna Marine Provincial Park are located in entrance to Sydney Inlet next to Clayoquot Sound.
Hot Springs Cove can be reached by sea plane (float plane), whale watching & Hot Springs tour boat or water taxi from Tofino.
Walking to Hot Springs takes about 30-40 minutes via boardwalk from the wharf. It is very enjoyable walk - surrounded by old healthy rain forest and beautiful coastline.
Hot Springs them self are absolutely marvelous. Very natural setting on shore of Pacific Ocean. There are 3 little natural pools and about 3 m/10 feet high HOT waterfalls.  Hot Springs are located at the end of Openit Peninsula with some hiking trails around. Some of these trails can be rugged in old forest.
Accommodations are available at Hot Springs Cove (wharf area), but NOT at Hot Springs location.
Nice kayaking at Hot Springs Cove area. Beautiful beaches and shoreline caves nearby.
Coming back to Hot Springs Cove is always very enjoyable for me. I have been there many times before.
Highly recommended to visit!

Vancouver to West Coast of B.C. and return - Barkley Sound - 2018

Dear friends.                                                                    14. November 2018

I have sailed to West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia at the end of May. It was little too early for West Coast of BC.
Sailing trip from Vancouver to West Coast of BC requires some planning and watching the weather forecasts. Tidal (Ocean) currents are the factor. Traveling is done into prevailing winds. Generally we try to sail with Ebbing current and light West to Northwest high pressure winds or Southerly flow with the low pressure systems.
Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound are part of Pacific Rim National Park. Broken Group Islands are very popular with Ocean kayaking. Wild and rugged islands can be difficult to navigate when afternoon thermal winds develop in Barkley Sound during summer months.
Whale watching tours are popular at West Coast of Vancouver Island. Many kinds of whales spent summer months at West Coast of Vancouver Island.
It is getting quite busy at West Coast of Vancouver Island now days. I have visited this area at least 15 times in last 30 years and the changes are noticeable.
Ocean waters at West Coast are fairly cold even during the summer months. Alaska's Ocean current follows the coast all the way to California.
West Coast is also popular with salt water fishing for Salmon and Halibut. Continental shelf provides many areas with shallow depths, which is productive for commercial crab harvesting (trapping).
I have spent almost 8 weeks at West Coast of Vancouver Island before heading back to inside waters. August and September can be foggy at West Coast of BC.
It takes 4-7 days of traveling with the sailboat from Vancouver to Barkley Sound depending on weather windows.
I had a great time visiting Barkley Sound again after many years.
Hummingbirds were fun to watch in the cockpit on my boat (pictures).
Barkley Sound and Broken Group have plenty of beautiful beaches, hidden coves and shoreline caves.
Highly recommended for Ocean kayaking!
Gray, Humpback, Minke and Orca whales frequently visit Barkley Sound.
Will go there again soon!
